It took Richard Godmoore three tries to place the telephone handset on the golden cradle. In shock, he sat bolt upright in his leather chair. Shanna Bartlett lay in a morgue someplace in Texas, and beside her, Parnell was just as dead. Smithwick had just called from a hospital in Austin, and no one knew where Kivu was. Deputy sheriffs—still police no matter what they called themselves in Texas—were waiting to question Smithwick. And Kivu? What on earth had happened to him?

Reporters were bound to follow closely on the tail of the police. Godmoore turned toward the computer and fumbled his way to the directory. Then a cold realization washed over him; he had no one to call. Parnell had handled the United States for him. And Parnell was dead. For the moment, Richard Godmoore had no way of controlling the situation.

Angrily, he leaped to his feet, paced back and forth until his gaze lit on the photo of him, Geoffrey, and the little ape. He plucked it off his desk, whirled, and threw it at the paneled wall across from him.

Hearing it crash, and the tinkle of splintering glass, he slumped, head in hands, as he fought for control. Time and space drained away. Only the widening gulf of futility remained within.

If this blossoms out of control, there will he questions at the stockholders’ meeting. I’ll lose it all. Fifty million pounds! It will evaporate like water in the Sahara.

“Damn you, Geoffrey! Damn you and your miserable little monkeys!”

Only then did he notice that when he had thrown the photograph of Geoffrey, it had impacted the wall amidst the pictures of his children, sending them all crashing down on the thick red carpet.
